I volunteered to be a speaker at River of Life Bible Camp July 5-9. I also was asked to be a counselor. I figured I'd be tired by the end of the week, but I also knew our camp ministries are hurting for help. While I was there I found out some of the other counselors were all in the same boat - they hadn't been thinking of volunteering, but when the appeal was made, they felt the Lord would have them to serve.
For many years it has been difficult to get people to help in our churches. Inter-Church is currently looking for 21 pastors to take full and part time positions to shepherd his flocks. Additionally many churches are having a hard time finding workers for VBS and other local ministries. The Lord said to pray to the Lord of the Harvest, that He might send workers. Jesus saw the people like sheep without a shepherd, needing leadership and direction. That appeal is still going forth today.
Evangelist John R. Rice was once asked, "How did you know the Lord called you into ministry?" Dr. Rice responded, "I wasn't. I volunteered. If the Lord wants me to stop, He knows where to find me." Maybe we should volunteer to be available, so that when the Lord does send us, we're ready to go where He sends and do what He commands.
What about my week at River of Life? I got stronger and better rested every day, maybe because I asked God to help me "mount up on wings as eagles". By Thursday lights out, EVERY CAMPER HAD MADE A PROFESSION OF FAITH!!! The kids were attentive, well-behaved and got along well. I couldn't be happier I went. Where God calls, He blesses!
